Overberg & Whale Coast

The Whale Coast is renowned for seasonal southern right whale sightings, rugged beaches, and charming towns like Hermanus. Beyond the whales, the Overberg offers rolling farmlands, fynbos, and dramatic coastal scenery.

Rugged and windswept, the Overberg and Whale Coast region stretches east of Cape Town along a coastline where mountains drop into ocean and wildflowers bloom through winter.

Between June and November, southern right whales gather in bays like Hermanus and De Kelders, offering some of the best land-based whale watching in the world.

The region’s charm lies in its contrasts – fynbos-covered mountains, wild beaches, sleepy fishing villages, and ocean safaris that might reveal dolphins, seals, or even great white sharks. Inland, the landscapes open into farmland and wine estates, while conservation areas like De Hoop Nature Reserve offer scenic hiking, cycling, and wildlife sightings in a tranquil coastal setting. It’s a laid-back destination ideal for nature lovers, road trippers, and couples seeking a gentler rhythm.
